Detroit’s heavyweights honored as American Muscle is celebrated during
Sportscar Vintage Racing Association weekend on June 28-30

LEXINGTON, OHIO (February 7, 2013)
The American Muscle theme will serve as the Featured Marque for the 31st Annual SVRA Vintage Grand Prix on June 28-30 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

The American Muscle celebration will thrill owners and fans of the greatest era in American automobile history. Detroit’s finest creations will fill the hillsides of Mid-Ohio. The response from last year’s expanded take on the Featured Marque celebrating all British manufacturers was a key factor in the decision to honor American Muscle this year. Fans can expect Mustangs, Corvettes, Chevelles, Firebirds, Chargers and more to fill the infield during the historic Sportscar Vintage Racing Association event.

Cars of this genre have been the stars of films, TV shows – and garages – across the country for decades. Both classics, like Bullitt and American Graffiti, and modern movies, such as the Fast and Furious series and Gone in 60 Seconds, feature dozens of American Muscle cars. They hold a special place in American history as well as that of the track. Shelby Cobras won two SCCA races at Mid-Ohio in the track’s first full season of 1963. The Trans Am Series, filled with these types of cars, has run 29 races in Lexington, Ohio since 1967.

“Mustangs, GTOs, Cudas and all the other muscle cars have been an integral part of racing lore and American culture for years and years. Like many of our fans, I’ve always loved these beautiful, powerful cars,” said Craig Rust, president of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. “We already see a lot of domestic cars at this SVRA event and are hoping to see even more classics when we celebrate American Muscle in 2013.”

Weekend tickets start at $25 when ordered through May 3. General parking is free and children 12 and under are also admitted free. Visit midohio.com anytime or call 800-MID-OHIO (643-6446) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. to order tickets or for more information.

A comprehensive motorsports facility, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course features a permanent road-racing circuit with two primary configurations: a 2.4-mile, 15 turn, and a 2.25- mile, 13-turn circuit. The park-like, 330-acre complex is located in Lexington, Ohio, near Mansfield, 60 miles north of Columbus and 75 miles south of Cleveland. The track has been called the most competitive course in the U.S. and annually hosts a diverse lineup of locally, regionally and nationally sanctioned racing events for amateur, club and professional drivers and riders. Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course opened in 1962 and is owned and operated by Green Savoree Mid-Ohio, LLC.
