Landscape Inspirations – A Kingwood Symposium

April 13 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

Save the date for the return of Kingwood’s annual Landscape Inspirations symposium on Saturday, April 13, 2024.

Celebrate the Country Place Era (1890-1930) of Kingwood Center Gardens — a time when American gardens were designed to emulate those in Europe with formal garden styles.

Keynote address presented by Tres Fromme, principal and founder of 3.fromme DESIGN, LLC.:
Ecstatic Beauty: The Enchantment of Country Place Era Estates
Country Place Era estates were unique domains dedicated to immersing owners and guests in multitudinous aspects of beauty. These unique combinations of garden, architecture, and art intentionally transported people outside of themselves, setting them into realms of aesthetic delight. Indeed, estates engaged people’s senses and imaginations, transforming daily routines into rich celebrations of life. Today, a number of estates continue to do so through creatively evolving their legacy decades after their founding.

Fromme will share his personal thoughts on various estates with which he has worked or visited over his career. The presentation will suggest how you might find inspiration for your own garden.

Additional speakers include:

Mark N. Gilles, proprietor, M. N. Gilles and former Director of Historic Preservation at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
Explore the nearby Arts and Crafts gardens of Stan Hywet Hall, designed by landscape architect Warren Manning. Gilles will share how the visions of the initial Stan Hywet Hall Foundation’s volunteers became the reality of restoration work, including the before and after of the 1996 Master Plan to restore twelve major gardens on the estate.

Charles Gleaves, former Executive Director of Kingwood Center Gardens
Connect with the history of the formal gardens in Mr. King’s time, how the gardens evolved through the time of Kingwood Center Gardens and plans to bring the gardens back to more original formsGleaves will share parts of the initial 2002 Kingwood Formal Garden Preservation Plan conducted by Heritage Landscapes, LLC: Preservation Landscape Architects and Planners, and how the study proposed repair and restoration efforts for Mr. King’s original formal gardens.
