South Park, located at 100 Brinkerhoff Ave. in Mansfield, Ohio, spans approximately 35 acres. This park is a hub for historical and summer activities and features an outdoor pavilion with a kitchen available for rent, a gazebo, walking trails, a playground, and open green spaces. It also includes a historical village and monuments honoring local history, heroes, and Johnny “Appleseed” Chapman.

From 2025 through 2026, the Mansfield and Richland County community will celebrate America’s 250th Birthday with a series of events highlighting South Park’s and Mansfield’s history since 1808. Additionally, in 2024, we celebrated John “Appleseed” Chapman’s 250th birthday, which will be part of our America 250 celebration.

A dedicated group of volunteers from the Richland Early American Center for History ( R.E.A.C.H.) maintain and operate the 1800’s historical village located in the park.

The Blockhouse, originally situated in Mansfield’s public square, is the sole surviving structure from the eleven built during the War of 1812 as a refuge from Native American attacks. Alongside the 1812 blockhouse, the 1808 Petersburg Log Cabin, and the blacksmith and woodworking shops, it is open to the public seasonally and during special events throughout the year.

Additionally, a pioneer homestead garden, managed by dedicated volunteers, educates the public on how to properly care and historical uses for herbs, fruits and vegetables, providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to cultivate their own gardens at home.
