13 (Sensory-Friendly) will close MY Theatre’s fourth season of sensory-friendly performances of youth theatre musicals for families with children and adults on the autism-spectrum and other developmental disabilities. This production is best suited for those audience members who are 12 years of age and older, and their families; but audience members of any age may attend.
MY Theatre’s Sensory-Friendly performances began with Shrek, The Musical in 2017, and the program has continued to engage and excite audience members of all ages. Musicals are performed in a friendly, supportive environment with slight adjustments to the production, including the reduction of any jarring sounds or lights focused into the audience area. Within the theatre, there is a quiet and play area, if family members need to leave their seats during the performance. For these special performances, no-cost, limited seating is available to individuals and families with developmental disabilities. Back by popular demand, 13 is the hilarious, coming-of-age musical which tells the story of preteen Evan Goldman. Taken from his fast-paced life in New York City, and planted in a small, sleepy town in Indiana, Evan finds himself surrounded by simpleminded middle school geeks, posers, jocks, and wannabes. Wanting to establish his place in the popularity “pecking order,” he finds himself clumsily trying to make his way toward a comfortable link of the food chain so he doesn’t end up being an outcast. With an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer, Jason Robert Brown, (Parade, The Last Five Years, Bridges of Madison County) 13 is a musical about fitting in – and standing out. Featuring a cast comprised entirely of teen actors, playing teenaged characters, the stories that come to life on stage are ageless, the emotions they explore timeless, the laughter and the memories they provide priceless.
