This intense four week drawing course focuses on drawing a portrait from a photo. Your instructor, Tony Sansalone, was the Best in Show Winner at the 2021 May Show at the Mansfield Art Center with his three 9ft tall charcoal drawings of his family. Tony, will show you the necessary techniques and tools needed to create high quality realistic charcoal or graphite drawing portraits.
Each student will work on a 30x40in paper taped on a 42×36 masonite backing, which will allow for each student to take their drawing home at the end of each class to continue working. Students who take this class will also be granted access to the classroom studio space if there is not a class happening. Students will have access to all drawing materials during class as well as in open studio if they choose to take advantage of our space.
The first week of class students will learn how to transfer their photo onto paper using the grid method. During that time your instructor, Tony, will teach you how to correctly sketch your reference using contour lines. The second, third, and fourth class will be focused on rendering and trying to make your drawings as realistic as possible.
Students will choose their own portrait/figure to draw, however please send your image to your instructor, Tony, a few days before class so he can have multiple printed reference copies for you when you arrive.
This class is all level friendly, although it is best targeted to those with some previous drawing experience. As mentioned, all materials will be provided, however, if students wish to bring their own materials please feel free to do so.
