The Adam Schuster Memorial Soccer Tournament is named after Adam Schuster who had a love and passion for the game of soccer (Futball). Adam was born in Franzfeld, Yugoslavia of German descendants on July 15, 1931. Driven out of his homeland after WWII, he immigrated to the United States in 1952 with his parents and sister, speaking no English and bringing very few belongings. He quickly picked up the language of his new country but always spoke with a distinct accent which often brought about interesting phrases or comments that most of his players remember to this day. He met his wife Erika Schmidt (who also immigrated to the US from East Prussia, Germany) in Mansfield, Ohio and married in 1954. They have 4 children: Ingrid, Karl, Monika and Annette; 16 grandchildren, including tournament board members Kassandra, Alaina, and Anya; and 11 great-grandchildren. Adam passed away in September 1999 after a battle with cancer. Adam collected the help of many volunteers through the 1980s to develop a program that grew from a handful of teams to thousands of players within our community. Adam directly impacted the leagues of Lake Erie Youth, AYSA and NCO and touched the lives of MANY individual players that he coached throughout the years. Adam first held a soccer tournament at the Mansfield Liederkranz in 1990 with a few local and travel teams. The tournament grew in size so that at one point over 120 teams participated at 6 venues. Teams traveled from the neighboring states of Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky and Pennsylvania.
Adam dedicated many years of loyal service to the Mansfield Liederkranz in bringing soccer to the area with a dedication of teaching soccer skills to youth of all ages as well as the enjoyment of this exciting game! It has been the wish of the Liederkranz Soccer Club to honor Adam Schuster for his 20+ years of dedication by continuing the tournament that he started. The family would like to thank all of the many volunteers who have donated their time to this tournament.
