Mohican Wildlife Weekend Celebrates Nature

Revel in the beauty of springtime in Ohio with Mohican Wildlife Weekend April 22-24, 2016! This year celebrates the 15th anniversary of the program. This year is even more special with a focus on the biodiversity of the area, which showcases the wonderful variety of species we have right here in Richland and Ashland County. With 30 different programs to attend at nine different locations, this diverse lineup will help you learn about the rich history and wildlife in the Mohican area. There are opportunities to explore for the whole family and the perfect chance to enjoy the outdoors.

From seminars to demonstrations, you won’t want to miss this wide range of options. Relax with Yoga on the Lake at Charles Mill Lake Park or get your heart racing with the Udder Nonsense 5k at Malabar Farm State Park. Learn something new and attend a talk about biodiversity at Mohican Memorial State Forest. You can learn about Ohio’s Diverse Mushrooms at Pleasant Hill Lake Park or even try your hand at fly-fishing and fly-tying at Mohican State Park. Take the kids to Happy Snappy: Secrets of the Snapping Turtle at Lowe-Volk Nature Center or learn about butterflies while crafting and snacking at Mohican Outdoor School. There’s even a birds of prey show presented by the Ohio Bird Sanctuary.

That’s just where the fun beings—learn about the various bird species here in Ohio at the Gorman Nature Center and take a birding boat tour at Clear Fork Reservoir. Be sure to bring binoculars! “Snakes Alive!” at Mohican State Park Resort Lobby gives you the opportunity to learn about (and meet) the misunderstood reptiles. Meet even more animals and get a chance to hold them at the Gorman Nature Center. For a yummy treat, head to the cast iron cooking demonstration at Charles Mill. Maybe less delicious, but just as interesting, give “Edible Insects” a try at Mohican State Park. Disc golf, scavenger hunts, and more are the best way to enjoy your weekend.

The best way to get the most out of your Mohican adventure is to stay overnight in the area. This will help you get your day started early so you don’t miss out on any of these events. Plan to attend the Welcome Reception and keynote speech by former Richland County Park District director, Steve Mckee on Friday night at the Gorman Nature Center. A full schedule is available on the official website, and program schedules are also available on location—an excellent way for you to plan out the whole weekend!

This great opportunity to see the diverse beauty of the Mohican area offers plenty of adventures for everyone. Take the kids, your parents, nature-friendly friends and make it a road trip full of fun to kick off spring.
