Why the Name Red?
When Destination Mansfield introduced its AI travel assistant, we wanted a name that reflected our community and would make visitors smile. Red was the perfect choice.
Played by Morgan Freeman, Red is one of the most memorable characters in The Shawshank Redemption. While the story is set in Maine, the movie was filmed right here in Mansfield/Richland County. Today, fans from around the world visit to see where some of the film’s most iconic scenes were brought to life.
If you’re curious about the movie, be sure to explore The Shawshank Trail, a self-guided driving tour featuring all 16 authentic filming locations. Along the way, you’ll visit places that helped turn this fan-favorite film into a cinematic classic.
