City of Mansfield to Open 1976 Half‑Century Time Capsule During America 250 Ohio Celebration
The City of Mansfield is pleased to announce a special America 250 Ohio ceremony to open the community’s Half‑Century Time Capsule, originally sealed during the nation’s Bicentennial observance in 1976. The ceremony will take place on July 4, 2026, with the exact time to be announced.
The time capsule, placed in 1976 during the American Revolution Bicentennial celebration, bears the inscription:
“To future generations, the people of Mansfield in our nation’s Bicentennial year present these symbols and records of our community life in the year 1976.” (Sealed during American Revolution Bicentennial observance, 1776–1976)
This historic moment will allow Mansfield residents to look back at the community’s life, culture, and aspirations as preserved by residents 50 years ago. The opening is part of the City’s broader participation in America 250 Ohio, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
Following the opening of the 1976 capsule, the City will install a new time capsule, designed to be opened on July 4, 2076, during America’s 300th birthday celebration. Community organizations, schools, and residents will have opportunities to contribute items that reflect Mansfield’s present‑day identity and hopes for the future.
“This is a rare and meaningful moment for our community,” said Public Works Director Louis Andres. “We have the chance to honor the people who came before us while creating something new for the next generation to discover in 2076.”
Additional details, including ceremony time and opportunities for public participation, will be announced in the coming months.
